Walking In Cyprus
Walking in Cyprus is obviously possible at any time of year, however temperatures are lowest and rainfall highest in the December to February period. On the other hand the heat in July and August can mean that walking is not very enjoyable even above 3000 ft, for the un-acclimatised visitor.
As a rule of thumb when considering lengths of walks you would be wise to reduce your expectation of your walking ability by about 25%, compared to Western Europe from mid-May to mid-September, to account for the higher temperatures experienced in Cyprus.
Another point to bear in mind, when considering your walking options, is the travel time to the starting point. The pages describing our walks provide a short description, distance options and travel times from Limassol to the start point. Our aim is to provide a 5 to 7 hour enjoyable walking experience, depending on hours of daylight, including all stops, but excluding traveling time to the start point.
Most tracks and trails in Cyprus are of a good, but normally quite hard surface. In most cases good walking trainers with firm soles and plenty of grip will be fine, although, you may well feel the benefit of walking boots, which provide more support, on our walks over 10 miles. Loose lightweight clothing, a hat with a brim, and high factor sun protection, are a must, and a shower-proof jacket is worth having.
You should have a small rucksack sufficient to carry a packed lunch, at least one litre of water (preferably two litres in May, June and September) and other essentials. We always carry some extra water in addition to our own expected needs, and a comprehensive first aid kit.
