The Donkey Sanctuary (Cyprus)
Just outside the picturesque village of Vouni is the Donkey Sanctuary (Cyprus) www.donkeysanctuarycyprus.org, which opened in 1994.
Entry is free.
The sanctuary currently plays host to 100+ donkeys, of all ages. It provides them medical care, farriery, dental care, and meets their specialist dietary needs, keeping the donkeys fit and happy to see visitors, taking and giving love to all who see them.
Until the mid 20th century Cyprus was famous for the quality of its donkeys. They played a very important part in the life of the local community, working all year round in the vineyards and more generally as family transport.
Even in modern times it has not been possible to completely substitute machinery for donkeys on the steeply terraced vineyards. Examples of these vineyards can be found all around the villages of Vouni, Omodos, Kilani, and Pera Pedi, on the slopes of Mount Aphemi.
