WHERE TO STAY TO WALK IN CYPRUS
Choosing a location to stay for a holiday is never easy. In Cyprus, which has for many years been a leader in package summer holidays, the profusion of good offers “out of season” can be confusing. We offer our own view in the knowledge that walking is of interest to you.
Perhaps you only wish to take a few short walks in a broader based seaside and site-seeing holiday, on the other hand you may wish to take a holiday dedicated to walking. Given the huge range of locations on offer, we recommend two locations as bases for walking at the lowest overall cost, including local transport.
LIMASSOL
Limassol is a busy port town and all year round holiday resort, with every type of value-for-money accommodation on offer in package deals from the UK all year round. It also hosts every holiday interest imaginable from Archaeology to Water Sports. It is ideal for those wanting to mix walking with other activities. Access around the town and to other towns by public transport is good and inexpensive.
Most importantly the town has the only express Mountains Bus Service to Troodos via a number of mountain villages, at a cost of 10 EUR day return (for 2008). With our help this can give access to a large number of walks, including many shown in our sample walks pages - just look for the note (Mountains Bus Walk) at the end of the walk description. In addition, the Limassol Forest, many square miles in area, and rising to 2000 feet is only 20 minutes drive from the seafront. We do not make any transport charge to visit the forest from Limassol, so that a days guided walking here costs only 20 EUR per person per day. Our own accommodation packages near Limassol offer just a couple of unusual out-of-town locations for people who prefer the quiet life!
TROODOS
The Troodos mountain region has many villages that offer accommodation from hotels to agro-tourism rooms. However, for those wishing to stay in the mountain region for a dedicated walking holiday without the expense of car hire, the village of Platres is the best possibility.
Platres has hotels and restaurants open year-round. With our help all of the Troodos walking routes, and those in the adjacent regions of Pitsilia and Machairas, and the Pafos Forest can be accessed easily. UK tour operators offer packages to several good Platres hotels during the walking season, and our own accommodation packages, again offer something unusual, so check them out! By staying in Troodos those wishing to walk every or most days avoid a great deal of travelling and enjoy the peace and quite of the most beautiful location in Cyprus!
